Peggy and Konstadina, two Greek-American girls from Cleveland, Ohio
decided to spend their vacation exploring their parents’ home country of
Greece. They packed their things and flew across the globe to the
Greece’s capital, Athens. Cleveland’s suburbs of wider roads and open
yards differed greatly from the smaller, winding and more condensed
streets of Athens. The girls witnessed this first hand when they grabbed
the bikes they liked from the Bike Expert shop and pedaled through the
streets of Athens. This was clearly more difficult than they thought.
The narrow and bumpy roads were absolutely unbearable.
The girls later explained that in Cleveland and many parts of the
United States, the roads were built for various types of transportation
such as a bicycle. Is it that difficult for a city such as Athens to
assemble streets that are more accessible for bikers or pedestrians? It
is no hidden story that Greeks are becoming more interested in
bicycling. It would be a shame to ignore this issue. Greece, a country
of natural beauty and a designation for tourism, should address this
evident issue. These roads make up the city of Athens and fixing them
while in this horrendous condition is the only way to solve the problem.
