Sir
Chris Hoy bounced back with a bang at the World Track Cycling
Championships in Copenhagen, as he romped to his tenth world title
despite another crash in qualifying. Hoy collected his first world title
in Copenhagen eight years ago and hit double figures in the Danish
capital with a display of raw power to see off defending champion
Maximilian Levy of Germany.
The 34-year-old flying Scot did not have it all his own way as
Levy took matters into his own hands and when France’s Francois Pervis
caught the Olympic champion napping, Hoy found himself in third place.
But Hoy puffed out his cheeks and powered his way to the front of the
field, holding off a late challenge from Azizulhasni Awang, the World
Cup champion from Malaysia, to storm to gold in 10.446 seconds. Awang
pipped Levy to silver in the closing metres but neither could match Hoy,
who has the chance to take his world gold medal tally to 11 in the
individual sprint later this week.
